Blog Re-themed!

(This is a bonus post!)

So I decided to re-theme my website! My older theme was a bit more suited to my slower pace of blogging. This one seems a lot simpler and cleaner, and easier to read. I might tweak it a bit over the next few days (the Twitter call out seems a bit off…) but this is basically what I want.

Let me know what you think! Good, bad, just this part needs to change, what? Also, I’m dying for a good tagline. Any ideas?

Suggestions are welcome below!

30 Day Challenge

I’m inspired!

For my 30 day challenge, my plan is to write one new blog post a day. My wife has pointed out that blogging is not for everyone, and its not exactly my strongpoint. Nevertheless, I want to write more; I’m not so concerned with my blog posts being amazing or popular or anything, I just want to see how it goes. So if you’re still following my blog, get ready to see some more activity!

(I won’t be writing Saturday or Sunday, just Monday through Friday. Maybe Saturday, but that’s not part of the goal.)

A Brief Intro to Web Security

So you may have noticed something going around facebook, a status says something like “FB has automatically set itself to the Non-Secure browsing setting!” Sounds pretty alarming doesn’t it? Why does facebook default you to something that is not secure? Is somebody looking at your facebook profile right now? Have they stolen your password? Just what can they actually do?

Map of facebook

In reality, facebook is no less secure than most sites you visit. Twitter, gmail (and other google services), tumblr, yahoo, etc. all do the same thing as facebook. The real danger is not really in having your account hacked. The real danger is the information you keep on facebook, or in any online account for that matter.

If someone were to hack into your facebook account, they wouldn’t be able to steal your password. They’d pretty much only get to drive your account for a bit — much like leaving yourself signed in at a public computer. But, on facebook, that could mean they figure out your full name, your date of birth, family member’s full names, and all sorts of other info about you. The kind of information that could be useful in an identity theft. Or the kind of information help them get past those security questions your online banking account is always asking you.

Hence, it’s a much better approach to be careful about the amount of information you put online. Because (as a general rule) you should always assume that almost anything you put online will be seen by someone else’s eyes sooner or later.

Update: Here’s another article describing this exact problem.

Welcome

Welcome to the new website!  I switched to using a tumblr blog, since my website was getting out of date and I don’t really have the time to maintain it.  Plus, this way you have a bit more visibility into my life, since it pulls in twitter and other stuff automatically.  The theme might change, it’s still in flux.  But, I believe this will be better in the long run.

The Beginning of a New Tumbl-era

So considering that GoDaddy just doesn’t have that great of hosting, and also considering the fact that I just haven’t had the time to update my site with all the functionality I want… I’ve been looking into tumblr.  So far I find it an excellent solution, mainly because it’s free and allows me to point my domain at it.  And, supposedly, it’s entirely customizable, so I could make it look like my old site if I wanted (to an extent).  This, to me, makes it a great choice.  Mobile posting would be so much easier, I’d likely post more often since it’s easier…  I really don’t see a downside.  Therefore, I am trying it out for a bit to see how I like it.  The only part that I don’t like is that I’d have to leave my old content behind (unless I can find a way to import it).  We’ll see.
